On Saturday, October 28th, Our AmeriCorps School Outreach Coordinator accompanied 20 students from Thomas Jefferson High School’s Pacific Islander Club to the 2016 UPRISE Pacific Islander Education Summit at Clover Park Technical College. UPRISE brings together Pacific Islander high-school students, their families, school administrators, faculty, and staff from around the Puget Sound. UPRISE cultivates healthy dialogue about the unique needs of Pacific Islander students for school staff, and provides tangible educational success skills for our PI students and their families.
UPRISE aims to:
- Empower Pacific Islander students with knowledge, skills and resources to advocate for their education; to develop leadership capacities; and to pursue their dreams and hopes for a brighter future.
- Support the Engagement of Pacific Islander parents/families in the education process of their children through meaningful dialogue and brainstorming with other parents and school personnel;
- Equip and strengthen the capacity of teachers/faculty who work with PI students.
